The reddit effect...

Yesterday was a 'busy' day here:

The traffic was more than double the prior 'record' of 6,700 hit way back in September 2005 (Oracle Open World 2005).

All because I got picked up on reddit.com.  It is still having an effect today as I already have as many views at 7am as I do on a normal day.

I've written about reddit before - it is a resource I use pretty much every day I get on the computer (which frankly is most days).  It was interesting to watch my own article go up and down the reddit ranks - and read the comments from an entirely different group of people.

Instead of "Tom Kyte - ambassador of Oracle", you're now "Tom Kyte - kiddie porn suspect". Larry must be happy...

Interestingly enough, my verification word is: igvhed.

reddit is actually created by a couple of 20 year olds. There are some really ambitious kids out there.

www.paulgraham.com I think he funded reddit. He has alot of good articles on software entrepreneurship and why he likes to fund kids.

good stuff.

Haven't really seen anything that needed commenting on. It is sometimes more fun/interesting to observe than participate.

I want to see the un-edited feedback, by participating on reddit, I'd be afraid of changing the tenor of the comments somehow.

I think it's hilarious that the source of the "Tom Kyte Effect" became subject to someone else's effect.

I agree with Jeff - that means that now you'll get lots of hits when you google "Tom Kyte" and some naughty words. That's not so hilarious.

... and the people on reddit seem to be mostly Lisp programmers, Paul Graham above all. Ambitious 20 year olds indeed. Is tkyte actually a Lisp hacker on the side?

Congrats on the traffic, Tom, it was quite a good entry. Best of luck to you the next time you try a Canadian border crossing ;-)

And to respond to Anon's comment (I'm one half of the two reddit 20-year-old founders -- we're 22 & 23 now) we were funded by Paul, but through his investment firm, Y Combinator. We owe a lot to them, so I don't feel the least bit guilty shamelessly plugging them.

Yes, we've still got quite a few Lispers hanging around. Steve wrote the first version in Lisp, but when we made the switch to Python, he created quite an uproar in the Lisp community.

There were a lot fewer Lisp-related articles on reddit after that.

(but a number of them still show up at programming reddit.
