What I learned today :)

That I grew my beard for a reason.

I am apparently more trustworthy looking simply because of it.

And here I thought I was doing it to save money on razors. Good side effects are always nice.

Tom, I was honored to meet you in Johannesburg, South Africa, on your recent Seminar: 7-Apr-2010.
I learnt something new, technically:
about DBMS_MONITOR, dbms_session.set_client_indentifier, "connection pool tracing", and the trcsess utility.
Which solves a major nightmare: when using a JDBC connection pool, you cannot identify/trace all the SQL for any user individually, as they share connections.
Now I can do real, 10046 tracing and optimization even when people share DB sessions and write to multiple trace os trace files and collate them into 1 out file to analyze.

I learnt something personal as well, that day: that you are a down-to-earth human, even though you are such a legend.
As for your beard - honestly (IMHO), I think it adds a couple of years, but gives you that professorial look.

But please remember the Warning at the end of that Article: "You can't just go all ZZ Top and expect people to trust you"
But since both you and ZZ Top are Rock Stars in your own right, you’re allowed your own unique look. 

Talking about ZZ Top reminds me of one of my favorite lyrics in Ninja Shack:
"CAN I GET IT RIGHT WHEN IT'S TIME TO STRIKE ... YEAH SAID NINJA JACK"

You struck it well here in SA, I just think it was not advertised widely enough by the local Oracle guys.
Looking forward to learning more, when you "Strike" again at the SAOUG (Cape Town), later this year.
Hopefully, we can get more keen Developers there as well, hard working guys we don’t always get/take the chance to learn from the greats.

Go ... Ninja Tom.

I *truly* hate shaving since my face usually turns red for a day ( especially when using an electric device).
BUT:
Last time I bought new razors was somewhere in 2006.
How I've survived?
Simply: scrub the beard before killing it. It makes life a lot easier.

A (heavy) beard is nothing but an ongoing session that needs to be killed every now and then.
It's worse than DBMS_JOB being able to revitalize itself until a max of 16 tries.
Is it a 'bug' or a 'feature'? :-)

It depends.

Also, see page 56 here (big interesting pdf), interesting point that someone bearded could get so much power in the military industrial complex of the time.

Larry Ellison's resemblance is striking.
Is it subliminal?
Or a corporate grooming code? :)
