I'm not a DBA anymore...

After nine years and nine months of running the database that hosts asktom, I've retired.

Not from answering questions, but rather from being the DBA and semi-SA for the machine that was asktom.oracle.com.

Asktom.oracle.com is now synonymous with APEX.oracle.com - Joel Kallman facilitated the move (here is the story on that). So, I'm now running in a database with thousands of other applications. And - it seems a bit faster than my old hardware (which was held together with some glue and duct-tape - the drives were failing left and right...).

For some stories on APEX and the ability to handle a pretty large load - I suggest you glance at:

But now, for the first time in years, I won't be afraid to check asktom when I land and get off of the plane. If something goes wrong - the data center guys will fix it :)

And yes, the intermittent "some IE users get an error on asktom" issue was found and fixed.

@gnd

Not at all, been looking to do this for a while. I spend a lot more of my time (50%) entirely on the road - keeping tabs on the machine during that time was hard.

I'll still be hands on - don't worry, I just won't have to worry about the status of the asktom database from day to day.

I will miss the "Ask Tom" series! You have been my favorite author all the time and I enjoyed your "Expert one-on-One" since the beginning.

Thanks for your contributions in Oracle world!

Blimey Tom, your heading had me sweating! Thank you so much for your effort to keep it going all this time. If you hadn't, it wouldn't be a staple part of a DBAs life and so important that it is now going to a new home. But I am so pleased you will be still doing the input!!!!

I too can't wait to see you at the UKOUG. :0)

So who do we call for these old scripts and references?

ie - This old chestnut is no longer an active URL:
http://asktom.oracle.com/~tkyte/runstats.html

I'm not sure many of your embedded URLs in your answers are relevant any more either.

Excuse me if I'm raising an issue you're already on top of!

@Scott

good point, I forgot about that ~tkyte file system stuff.

I'll have to work on putting a page together in APEX to link to files I'll upload into my "files" stuff.

It'll take a few days, but I'll put it back up there. The URL will be different (not using the file system at all with the new stuff), but the content will remain the same.

Retired, eh? Somehow I don't see you "retired".

And I thought you have been a "database technologist" for a long time now, not a DBA.

Seriously, it's good to see you reclaim some of your life. Congrats!

good move.

Hmm.. Are you going to sell the "Original Ask Tom computer" computer on eBay or something? It's like a piece of Oracle history. :P

Hi Tom,

Since you've 'moved/retired':
Some threads I'd like to share/refer to/fresh up on/point out to others aren't found anymore?
Example:
the 'classic' (imo):
"(not) in vs. (not) exists"
is gone?
The 'search' seems to behave differently?

Broken links make me sad.

So would you like review my new site, and advise how I can grow it from your guru experience?
