Would you like to tell...

Would you like to tell Oracle what you think about partitioning?  You can choose to participate in a partitioning survey if you want to...

May you please some day spend a few words about the Enhancement Request process - how to "tell" Oracle that you want something new, or improved.

That is, how ERs are evaluated by Oracle, by which criteria they are weighted ... how to submit them in the first place ... how to submit them effectively ... etc

I'd definitely love to have something "stragg-like" to be implemented natively ;)

how to submit them ?
metalink -> SR -> Create SR ->
Choose "Product Enhancement Request" as type of SR
no problem

Partitioning:
great feature, for sure I'm going to participate in the survey

by the way: is "self-made-partitioning" via "partitioned views" still available in 10.2 ?

Well I've definitely asked to participate - headline from me partitioning should be free for EE customers and extra cost for SE/SEOne customers, I can dream right.

sokrates (you've forgotten how to spell you own name, but I guess after a few thousand years that's forgivable) yes partitioned views still work in 10.2.

partitioned views are not only still available for enabled by default in 10g - yes.

I'm totally with Niall on this one. Partitioning should be an included feature of EE (at least), not an extra-cost option.

Between partitiong and the diagnostic pack, Oracle is just insane. But I wouldn't use anything else ... at least until I get to play with postgresql ;)

Hmmmmm... clicked the link, filled in my details, got an email with another link, clicked on that.... and voila!

I get a survey on a Service Request that is not associated with our customer support number... (and no, nothing to do with partitioning either)...

Ooops...I need to log an SR with the survey :-)

Just to get some TKBlog juices going, I'd like periodic range partitions to auto add and auto drop. We do so many daily partitions with a 2month or 6month retention it seems an obvious addition.

OK, so thinking about it the add could be a little tricky (not impossible), we split a maxvalue partition, others may add. But drop would be simple. Drop paritions older than sysdate - 60.

BTW, Tom you were talking about words we use that we think we know what they mean but actually mean the opposite.

Periodic: Characterized by repetition of patterns in fixed intervals of space or time.

Mark -

actually - "add" - that'll happen

"drop" - you will do that.

Connor, can you send me the email you received when you asked to participate in the Partitioning Survey.

Thanks,
Lilian (lilian.hobbs@oracle.com)

I am the person who has organized the survey

As a survey, partitioning is a pretty easy topic...

Pros: "Awesome, love it, myriad of uses, huge benefits"

Cons: "What?!?!?! I have to pay EXTRA for this ?!?!?!"

I'm looking forward to participating. What is the Prize? ;-) (The link currently "out of service due to maintenance") I am going to do a presentation at the EOUG on this, what a great feature it is and when it is the wrong thing to use.
