No great thing is created suddenly. —Epictetus (A.D.200)
How true – I agree with the sentiment expressed on that site as well (re: The McDonalds culture). “Hey, I’ve got 30 seconds – make me an expert”. I hear it all of the time – drives me nuts.
Anything good – anything really worth having or acquiring – will probably take a while. I spent six years in utter obscurity at my first job (well, I gained good visibility inside the company by the time I left) and another five years in Oracle (getting known inside Oracle technically – but not so known outside Oracle) before I came anywhere close to what I do now. Eleven years. It was really thirteen – that was when I started AskTom.
Good things take time.
Well done is better than well said. —Benjamin Franklin
Actions speak louder than words. Indeed.
Know thyself. —Socrates
How many of you out there like your job? Really like your job? I mean really really like your job. Why not?
And my personal all time favorite:
No matter where you go, there you are. – Buckarro Banzai (and others…)
I like it just because it is so obvious…

Love that movie. Another one (one of my favorites) was :
"Where are we going?"
"Planet Ten!"
"WHEN?"
"REAL SOON!"
That site is a good find - thanks for sharing. :-D
I have always liked the quote: "Those who do two things at once, do nothing". I can't remember who this quote is from...
I really, really like my job !
It's longer than ten words, but my favorite is this, from Admiral Grace Hopper, one of the first software engineers. I cut it out from a DEC newsletter's interview with her about 20 years ago:
'Never, never, never say, "We've always done it that way." Be open to new ideas and new concepts. We can't stand still. If you have a good idea, if you've walked all the way around it and looked at it from every angle, go ahead and do it because it's much easier to apologize than it is to get permission.'

I liked that one - in one of my talks - I have a thing about "Things you know".
When talking about "things you know that just ain't so" - I simply say "what are your standard operating procedures". Very similar sentiment.
Never say never,
Never say always,
I always say....
I also like this Frank Zappa's one:
"Without deviation from the norm, 'progress' is not possible."
"before enlightenment i carried water and chopped wood, after enlightenment i carried water and chopped wood" -- old zen saying
"Build a man a fire and you keep him warm for a day,
Set a man on fire and you keep him warm for the rest of his life".
Wise words indeed.
"The tiger of your mind is more fearsome than the tiger of the forest."
a witty saying proves nothing. gotta love voltaire.
Two words.
I personally feel that liking your job is a function of the work you do and secondly, the people you work with. Even if the first part is taken care of, the second part seems to be an elusive thing, especially with the number of mergers and consequently the team re-organizations taking place in the corporate landscape today. It seems like you need to start from scratch and re-establish your credibility/reputation with your manager/peers every time you are involved in one of these re-orgs. I recently read in a career development book that you have to think of yourself as a free-agent in today's job market, ready to make the move when the next right thing comes along. Doesn't leave you much time to settle in and like your job in my opinion. Anyway, my 2 cents...

Love it...getting it tatoo'd
Forgive me for asking something that has absolutely nothing to do with the current topic...
If someone says they are an "Oracle Master", I'm assuming they have taken & passed Oracle's Certified Master test(s).
However, if someone says they have "five Oracle Masters Certificates"... does that mean they just sat in an Oracle class during the 7.x / 8i days, and got a certificate for attending?
I'm a wee bit leery about that statement.
yep, the Buckaroo Banzai quote is one of my favorites, as is the movie
then there is:
"and now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisble to the eye"
or a friend (who is a therapist) who says "always is never true, never is always false"
that's good for an hour or two of mindtwisting, trying to understand :)
"Good is the enemy of Good Enough"
A soviet general told soviet engineers during WW2 when they wanted to improve the main soviet battle tank.
The point being this works, let's move on.
"always is never true, never is always false"
I like that one - easier than the one I use
Never say Always
Never say Never
I always say.
I joined Oracle inthe late ninties and one of the resounding quotes (which I see ealier in this thread) was:
"It's easier to get forgiveness than permission"
I work in pretty big firms now with vast amounts of red tape - this applies more than ever.
One of my favourites that I use on a daily basis in the wild world of a DBA is "Do what is important, not what is urgent". It really helps me to keep things in perspective when my inbox is full and my phone is ringing off the hook!
Tom,
You're welcome to borrow it, she won't mind :)
it does help me to keep perspective when I tend to think in the extreme ends of the pendulum. There's usually a middle ground that works
*cough*
"Oracle, it's not just a database:
it's a lifestyle!"
my fav quote :
"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where-" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.
"-so long as I get somewhere," Alice added as an explanation.
"Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."
-"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"
I hate being a philosopher !
A great set of quotes with similar pearls of wisdom.

I've seen that quote as "Perfect is the enemy of good enough." Another quote (which also referred to armor, but applies equally well to LIOs): "Quantity has a quality all its own."
Another good quote from Buckaroo Bonzai:
"Character is what you are in the dark."

One that rang a meaning to me, (as I am quite lazy) is:
"I rust when I rest"
(when I rest more than needed is what is the intended meaning I guess)
