I was in Montreal...

IMG_1422

I was in Montreal in Quebec Canada yesterday giving a presentation. The venue was the Paramount Theatre downtown. It was strange presenting in a movie theatre but it worked surprisingly well.

We were in room 11 as shown above – neat marquee – “Now Playing – Tom and David”. I was there with David Knox for the day. At first I thought “Hmm, a movie theatre, that is a bit strange” but then I saw the screen. The first time I turned around and looked at SQL*Plus towering above me (it was an Imax theatre to boot), I was convinced – a movie theatre is a great place to give a talk. They had this sound system thing “down pat” – no problems hearing us, no problems seeing the material (the room was actually designed – gasp – to see the screen from every seat!). Additionally – they had the external noise problem solved as well – movie theatres were designed not only to show movies but apparently to give talks as well.

The neat thing was that during breaks we got to see movie trailers – it was hard to follow the movie trailer from “Something About Mary” – I kept laughing every time I saw it.

I was tempted to sneak next door while David was talking to catch the “Corpse Bride”, but I stayed and had my popcorn and soda while he talked (what else would you serve for an afternoon break at a movie theatre after all?).

All in all – it was a good, but long day. Didn’t get back home until about 10:40pm, flight was of course – delayed (surprise, surprise).

Now playing - Tom and David

LOL. Hey, at least it wasn't Tom and Jerry.

Doing presentations in a movie theater sounds like a great idea. Let us know when you do another one (and how much a matinee ticket is ;-D).

If it was one of those theaters with the semi-reclining seats I believe things would be perfect. You should do a nationwide theater tour. Regal Cinemas presents...

The thought of a 7 story Imax presentation of SQL*Plus makes me laugh. A 14 foot prompt would be pretty nice.

Tom,

An added bonus was how confortable the seats were for the participants...

Both you and David gave excellent presentations.

Hi Tom -

Can you please add back the list of other Oracle & related sites you frequent? (It was in the right-hand column, now it's not.) I was using the blog page as a handy on-topic links page and never bookmarked them.

Don't forget you can click on a commenter's name to get to their Blogger profile and hence to blogs, if that's the sort of thing you like.

Good think I wasn't with you on that trip - I don't think my name would fit on the marquee as well as Dave's. :)

I did it in a cinema in Madrid once ;-)

The big screen was terrific, but with my audience, it looked a bit sparse in there. Fortunately I had trouble seeing anyone because the lights were down and they were too far away.

I panicked a little when I first walked in and saw the size of the place.

Cheers,

Doug

Oh man, now I'm jealous. Haven't been to Montreal for several years.

Next time you're there, you need to go have a sandwich at Schwartze's. Best damned smoked meat on the planet.

Intention was not flattery at all. I was trying to be funny. Too bad it comes off as flattery.
I agree there is a bit of flattery in it.

PS. I have disagreed with Tom before on a different thing.

Someone has already suggested it, but it's worth repeating: Put your presentations on DVD - they'd be VERY helpful, expecially to those of us who (for whatever reason) can't get to such presentations; also, you'd make a mint out of it!

I sadly missed your talks in Toronto.... it would be have been good to see them (and Jonathan's), since I've been following your writings for so many years. Plus I know Ian Abramson who was also presenting there...

Then again, I suppose it would have been weird for a BEA guy to show up to Oracle's offices. [grin]

In the same vein as DVD's, how about putting your presentations up on Apple's iTunes Music store?

Either as video podcast, similar to the existing otn podcasts, or maybe in the new pay model, like the Desperate Housewives/Lost/etc episodes?

Tom,
Is there any reason why you had to remove those links off your blog? Guess it had nothing to do with redirecting the traffic ;-)
